Despite offered sums of money, a family refuses to make space. Today they live like the Gauls from Asterix & Obelix; but are celebrated by their neighbors.
Where does the family live? As realestate.com.au and dailymail.co.uk report, there is a quasi-Gallic village in the west of Sydney, Australia, just like in Asterix and Obelix. Surrounded by a new development and besieged by investors, a single family holds out on a property they have owned for decades.
The above Reddit post summarizes the changes around the prominent property in fast motion. In the meantime, what was once farmland has become a densely populated development, except for the one exception right in the middle.
No move despite million-offers
What are they being offered for what? The exact sum currently offered cannot be determined with certainty. But currently, the family is probably being offered around 30 to 35 million euros for the approximately 20,000 square meter property. Depending on the division, 40 to 50 individual small houses could be sold by the investors behind the area called “The Ponds”; with millions of euros in profit. But as it looks, the gap in the residential area will remain.
Although prices have been climbing for years, and residents report being bombarded with stacks of notes at the door of the five-bedroom villa, they remain stubborn.
What do the neighbors think? According to statements from residents of the area quoted in the articles linked above, the family’s behavior is met with approval. Especially the direct neighbors, who have their houses on the sides of the mostly open area, hope for the family’s perseverance. They find the view of greenery much more pleasant than the closeness that otherwise characterizes life in the neighborhood.
