Final Fantasy XIV offers an hours-long main quest, where we are sent from NPC to NPC. However, one of the companions is playing a dirty game and lures an innocent newbie to a point where death awaits.
Why could he die there? At the location where the player has to speak with the NPC Thancred, a Maahes enemy at level 50 is waiting for him. Players only reach this level towards the end of the campaign. Furthermore, this is an A-rank elite monster that can only be defeated by a group of several players at the same level.
The Maahes can spawn at multiple locations on the map in Ul’dah, so it is particularly unfortunate that the player must go to this spot. In his Reddit post, you can see the situation in detail. He comments on the event by asking if Thancred really wants to meet there:
The problem is that the enemy is triggered immediately as soon as the player is within range. Therefore, it is impossible for him to continue the quest and progress in the story. If the player were to approach Thancred, the Maahes would defeat him with just one hit.

Players offer their help
How does the community react to this? The community in Final Fantasy 14 is extremely accommodating. One user suggests to the player to simply ask for help in the chat. Someone would surely come to kill the monster for him.
Some players share similar stories. When the Korean servers of FF14 opened in Korea, there was not a single player who could take on the monster. Therefore, a game master had to help and take on the monster with the panther monster.
User s_decoy recounts that a similar situation occurred at the release of the latest expansion Endwalker. An A-rank enemy spawned right in front of the point where players had to get to for a mission in the main story.
He described the subsequent massacre as follows:
We had a mob of probably a hundred players who kept rushing at him over and over again to try to learn his mechanics quickly enough to defeat him. At one point, literally every single person trying to fight him died, and he sat back – we all came back and tried again!
Other users also report their attempts to bypass high-ranking mobs. However, most take the situations with humor and appreciate that Final Fantasy XIV has such memorable moments.
