- GameShare enables the sharing of compatible games from “Switch 2” systems to other “Switch 2” consoles or to older original Switch consoles.
- Only Switch 2 consoles can start the game sharing, but both Switch and Switch 2 can receive shares.

- Shared games can only be played online during an active GameChat session.

What is GameShare? GameShare is a new feature introduced with the Switch 2. Users can share compatible games with friends and family members and play together, even if the recipients do not own the game themselves. This feature works both locally and online. Additionally, you can share game licenses with other devices for a limited time.

What is required for GameShare?
- You definitely need a Nintendo Switch 2 if you want to share games with friends. Because only with a Switch 2 can you initiate sharing. This applies to both local and online exchanges.
- Games must be compatible with GameShare. At the start, these include Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Super Mario Odyssey, Big Brain Academy: Brain vs. Brain, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, 51 Worldwide Games, and Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV (via Nintendo.de)
- If you want to share your games online with friends, you will need a “Nintendo Switch Online” membership for online GameShare after March 31, 2026.
Virtual Software Cards: Share Games on the Switch
How does sharing work? Nintendo is introducing so-called Virtual Game Cards (VGCs). According to Nintendo, you can exchange your games on both the original Switch and the Switch 2 with other consoles.
Before the first digital exchange, you first need to connect your two consoles locally. After that, you can exchange your games between the consoles. If you own two consoles that are linked to the same Nintendo account, you can choose on which console you want to play your titles.
Important: Once someone uses your game, you cannot use it. This is reminiscent of the principle of Steam Family, where only one player can use a license. Exclusive titles of the Switch 2 cannot be shared, however.
