The announcement about the end of Amazon’s MMORPG New World surely came as a surprise to many players. Now the game is completely sinking into chaos on Steam.
After Amazon announced that it would lay off 14,000 employees and reduce work on its MMORPGs, New World was affected shortly thereafter. The company announced that the game will be discontinued.
This caused outrage in the community. Chaotic effects of the announcement are now evident on Steam.

What can be seen on Steam? If you open the game page on Steam, you will notice that you no longer have the option to buy the game. This option has been completely removed.
The gallery on Steam at the top of the page, where you can view videos and images of a game, was temporarily affected as well. At times, all videos and images were removed and there was only one image left, which indicated the closure of the game.
Without a purchase option and game material, all signs of life from the MMORPG had disappeared.
In the meantime, the deletion of the gallery has been reversed, so you can again view game material on the Steam page of New World.
Also, Josh Strife Hayes, one of the biggest content creators in the MMORPG sphere with 978,000 subscribers on YouTube and over 200,000 followers on Twitch, has noticed the changed Steam page and directed harsh words towards Amazon. On X, he writes:
“New World is no longer available on Steam. The only image is this maintenance notification. The developers worked extremely hard to create a great game, yet the company’s greed and their obsession with soulless AI, placed over human art, have once again triumphed. Suits don’t care about games. Developers do.”
How does the community react? The community is punishing the game, unsurprisingly, quite severely. The number of negative reviews in recent days far exceeds the positive ratings. While on October 28, 2025, there were 143 positive and 483 negative reviews, on October 29, 2025, there were 236 positives but also a staggering 864 negative reviews.
Also, in the comments on Steam, there are correspondingly enraged players. Some of the recently written comments include:
- “Amazon are scammers….. Releasing a new addon and using lots of advertising to entice new players to buy a game that they intend to shut down shortly after is a deceptive tactic. Steam should seriously consider taking action against Amazon in the interest of their community,” writes Pfiffkobra9
- “You can’t actually tell anyone, exactly at the moment when New World was having a resurgence, with player numbers more than tenfold, Amazon ends all support, cuts their entire Amazon Games division, and lets the game just die,” comments Omni
- “I bought the game 5 days ago and spent 12 hours ‘playing’ it, including waiting times for logging in. Now it has been announced that the game is basically no longer supported and the servers will be shut down soon. My refund was denied. That is fraud!”, complains Lenny Guerro
