The new Aeternum version of New World primarily targets new players, but the revamped version of the MMORPG also brings fresh content for veterans. Two of these features, along with the Season of Opportunity and the streaming event Trials of Aeternum, have been presented in detail by the developers.

Why does New World Aeternum mainly appeal to new players? With Aeternum, New World will launch on October 15, 2024, for the first time on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Amazon Games is likely hoping for numerous new players who will explore Aeternum for the first time.

The developers have announced some challenges for experienced Aeternum champions, but there are not too many. Whether that is enough to compensate for the long content drought, MeinMMO already questioned after the last open beta.
In any case, the developers of New World are using the time until the launch of the Aeternum version to showcase these important veteran features—the new 10-player raid and the fresh PvP zone— in detail. There were also details about Trials of Aeternum and the new season.
The Gorgons’ Lair
What is the new raid about? The Gorgons’ Lair is the first raid for 10 players. The Gorgons have risen and are gathering an army of Herkynes around them. To stop them, you need to assemble a team of powerful players, infiltrate the Lair, and survive a gauntlet of challenging puzzles and epic boss fights (via newworld.com).
The developers promise a challenging trial with complex mechanics that the Sandworm Trials or the Mutators cannot match. The stomping and thrashing of the huge Echidna should change the arena.
Afterward, you will face Typhon. The grim guardian of a massive bridge lays thorny traps for intruders and devours adventurers who try to cross. Finally, Medusa appears in her grotesque mutated form. She spreads toxic spores and breeds hordes of Herkynes.
Each of the three bosses belongs to a chapter of the raid. Each chapter will include a section with enemies, a puzzle or an action sequence, and the corresponding boss.
What loot can be found in the raid? In the Gorgons’ Lair, you can obtain a new crafting material that enables you to create equipment with an armor value of 725. Additionally, there is another, extremely rare type of crafting item, about which nothing is yet known, and three new effects (one effect for weapons, armor, and accessories) that can only be found in the new raid.
The Cursed Fog
MeinMMO had already informed you about how the first tests of New World Aeternum’s new PvP zone have been received. Now, there was a developer deep dive on newworld.com, where you can learn more about the fresh area.
What is the new PvP zone about? In the foggy areas in the southwest of the Plunderer’s Reef, lawlessness reigns. There, the curse of “Greed” drives the treasure hunters of La Esperanza into murderous madness. Even the closest comrades betray one another. Collect cursed doubloons and resources, but flee in time before other hunters snatch your loot.
With the new zone, the developers want to offer you a PvP content that is always available and takes place in the open world. In the optional free-for-all zone “The Cursed Fog” (a revamped version of the Plunderer’s Reef), there are light extraction mechanics, plenty of space for players who enjoy sneaking around, and tons of loot for all adventurers.
Anyone entering the zone is expected to find three ways to earn equipment with an armor value of 700+ (for solo players, this may even be the best option in the game). The developers do not reveal the specifics of these.
To prevent players from forming large alliances to hunt down all others, the developers have taken several measures:
- In the new free-for-all system, there are no longer any bindings to groups, companies, or factions. Even if you fight alongside friends, it is easy for you to harm each other or even kill one another.
- The developers have also introduced a new crowd control system to prevent players from lingering in large groups for too long.
- Finally, loot chests now function as regular resources. Once looted, they become available to other players only after respawning.
Trials of Aeternum
With New World Aeternum, the three-week event Trials of Aeternum begins, where you can conquer special challenges and earn useful rewards.
Week 1: Arrival
The shipwreck was just the first step onto this long-forgotten island. Experience the strange inhabitants of Aeternum, improve your skills, and take dangerous chances as you explore a vast, beautiful world. Each challenge in the “Arrival” phase will be announced at the beginning of the first week.
For example: Complete an expedition. Depending on your team, you will receive forest green (Xbox Series X|S), river blue (PlayStation 5), or mountain red (PC) rewards at the end of each week.
