Since July 12, it has been possible for owners of the Onyx Advantage Pack to play the MMORPG Neverwinter on the Playstation 4.
All others will have to wait until July 19, when the official launch of the Free2Play MMO takes place. We have already dived into the adventures on Sony’s gaming console and familiarized ourselves with the new controls and other adjustments.
Neverwinter is Neverwinter plus controller
In terms of content, Neverwinter on the PS4 matches the state of the PC and Xbox One version. All previously available modules are included, meaning you will have plenty of content offered to you, leading from the city of Neverwinter through Icewind Dale to the Underdark. PvP players can look forward to the Strongholds addon, which offers the ability to build your own castles and wage siege battles against rival guilds. So there’s plenty of adventure and challenges for Playstation 4 players.
Gameplay still occurs from a third-person perspective, guiding your character through the vast areas. The available races Humans, Dwarves, Elves, Half-Elves, Tieflings, Halflings, Half-Orcs, and Drow remain unchanged, as do the classes. Here you choose between Guardian Fighter, Two-Handed Weapon Fighter, Battle Cleric, Trickster Rogue, Tactical Wizard, Hunters Ranger, Devastating Warlock and Oathbound Paladin. Each race and class gives you advantages and disadvantages that you’ll need to weigh before making a decision and giving your hero a unique appearance and name.
Now you explore the areas, talk to NPCs, trade, accept quests, and fight numerous enemies like undead, orcs, and demons in fast-paced and action-packed battles. Of course, not (only) alone. You team up with other players to experience adventures together, complete raids and compete against each other in PvP battles. So far, all of this is known from the PC version of the MMO. However, the controller controls are new.
Anyone switching from the PC version to the Playstation 4 version of Neverwinter will need to adjust a little. On PC, it’s possible to map many skills and actions to the keyboard keys. However, the Dual-Shock-4 controller of the Playstation 4 does not have quite as many buttons. Therefore, there are also key combinations. Certain attacks, for instance, are mapped to the "L1" and "Triangle" buttons when the other buttons are already assigned. You need to get used to this a bit, and it takes a little while for all button assignments and combinations to become second nature. However, once you have mastered the controls, you can enjoy the fast-paced battles just as much as on PC.
Neverwinter PS4: An adjusted interface
In addition to the controls, the UI has also been adjusted. Everything appears slightly larger. For example, the inventory offers larger slots with larger icons. This sometimes means that you need to scroll to see everything. However, you can quickly get used to that. The clarity remains intact. The hotbar in the game has been changed by Cryptic Studios to reflect the button layout of the controller. This way, you can also directly see in the game which button to press for a specific action.
Those who play a lot on the console will surely find it easy to navigate the controls and UI. PC gamers, however, need some time to adjust. However, we had just as much fun on the PS4 as we did on PC after a short time. What is quite disappointing, however, is that the Foundry is not available in the console version. PC players create their own quests and areas using the editor and then make them available to other players. This brings a steady stream of content, which admittedly is not always convincing. Nevertheless, there are good quests that you would certainly have enjoyed playing on the console as well.
We also missed a crossplay function between the different platforms. It would have certainly been fun to experience adventures in Neverwinter together with PC and Xbox One players. But these issues plague many MMORPGs, and we can’t really blame Neverwinter for it; it seems more to be a problem with Sony and Microsoft.
Is Neverwinter Pay2Win?
However, the well-known in-game shop is included. In this shop, you buy optional items that provide a certain level of comfort. Opinions are divided on whether or not the items enable Pay2Win. We believe this depends on what you expect from the game. If you want to play through all the content as quickly as possible, have the best equipment, and be the most powerful player, you will probably have no choice but to spend money in the shop.
However, if you don’t care and just want to experience the story at a comfortable pace, complete quests, and have fun with friends, you generally don’t need to invest anything. With Neverwinter, you can also have a lot of fun on the Playstation 4, and an MMO fits the console very well. I spent countless hours with Neverwinter on PC and had a lot of fun without spending a cent. When I checked out the Playstation 4 version of the MMO and got used to the controller controls and the adjusted UI after a short adjustment period, I was back in the thick of the battle for Neverwinter city. Since I have already experienced many pen & paper adventures in the Forgotten Realms and played almost every D&D video RPG, I always look forward to being able to lay back on the couch, take the controller, and play Neverwinter on the Playstation 4. While the MMO is still not perfect, I still have a lot of fun with it.
