Woman Received Thousands of Calls and Messages
What happened back then? In the first episode of Squid Game, protagonist Gi-hun receives a business card with an eight-digit number. As it turned out, this was a real phone number if you added the South Korean area code 010 in front of it.
This area code is automatically added for domestic calls, which suddenly resulted in thousands of calls from curious fans to a Korean woman, who wanted to know what happens when you dial the number.
In an interview with the Korean site Money Today, the woman, Kim Gil-young, revealed the extent of the phone terror: Since Squid Game aired, I have received messages and calls around the clock.
The woman said she had been using the number for over 10 years and could not just change it, as she used it for business purposes. However, the constant calls made it difficult for her to live her daily life.
She had to delete over 4,000 numbers from her phone. I receive calls day and night out of curiosity, without any sense of time, so the battery of my phone is dead after half a day,
said Kim Gil-young.
She reached out directly to Netflix and the production company Siren Pictures. As a result, the woman’s phone number was removed from the relevant scenes and replaced with a different sequence of numbers.
The business card is also seen again in the current 2nd season – this time Netflix has ensured from the outset that there is no repeated phone terror.
