George Lucas created a gigantic universe with Star Wars in 1977, which still produces series and movies today. However, the director is convinced that there is another sci-fi film that is much better.
Which film does George Lucas mean? George Lucas is a big fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey. He liked the film so much, that he even included an Easter egg to the sci-fi classic in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
In the documentary “Standing On The Shoulders Of Kubrick: The Legacy Of 2001” (via Filmstarts), George Lucas revealed that 2001: A Space Odyssey is, in his eyes, even better than Star Wars:
Stanley Kubrick made the definitive science fiction film, and it will be very difficult for someone to come along and make a better film […] On a technical level, Star Wars can certainly hold its own, but personally, I consider 2001 to be much better.
There are other directors like Steven Spielberg who appreciate the film. The director (Jaws, Jurassic Park) raved about his cinema visit of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
In the following video, you can watch the trailer for the sci-fi classic:
2001: A Space Odyssey is considered one of the best sci-fi films
What kind of film is it? 2001: A Space Odyssey was first shown in 1968. Stanley Kubrick was appointed as the director. The film features various encounters between humans and strange, black monoliths over several timelines.
The monoliths appear to influence human evolution. Dr. David Bowman, played by Keir Dullea, travels to Jupiter and encounters such an object. It sends him on a transcendent journey.
Why is it so good? Above all, the visual special effects during the transcendent journey are one of the highlights of the film. For George Lucas, the film is overall a pioneer of the sci-fi genre, as it was the first sci-fi film to be taken seriously.
Until then, sci-fi was mostly concerned with giant monsters and spiders. 2001: A Space Odyssey, on the other hand, deals with philosophical themes, such as the existence of higher beings and the depths of space.
Although George Lucas was the creator of the Star Wars universe, he has little say in the current films. This makes him sad: George Lucas was very disappointed when Disney didn’t want him for Star Wars 7 – he compared it to a breakup
