In Destiny 2, Bungie has revealed some news for the loot shooter in its latest TWaB post. Among them is an upcoming catalyst that many fans have been wishing for years, specifically for the weapon ‘Thorn’. We will show you everything important about it.
What is the Thorn? In Destiny 1 and 2, there is an iconic weapon that everyone should have heard of or seen, which is the exotic hand cannon ‘Thorn’. This tool of death shoots toxic thorns at its victims and slowly drains the life of its opponents. Players already labeled the weapon as the ultimate piece in Destiny 1, defeating many guardians with just a few shots.
It also made its entrance in Destiny 2, but not as powerful as it was back then. Players often wished for a catalyst because the weapon was lacking that certain something to keep up with the new weapons. The fans of the shooter have waited for many years, but now it should be over – Bungie has announced a catalyst for Season 23, and it’s actually quite good.

Players have long hoped for a catalyst – Soon it will be here
What has Bungie announced? Bungie has called the Thorn as a guest in the latest TWaB. According to the developers, it was time for one of the iconic weapons from the loot shooter to receive a catalyst, and which candidate would be better suited than the Thorn itself.
This is supposed to increase the weapon’s strength in PvP and also bring about a change in the base behavior, making the use in PvE more enjoyable.
The collection of remnants can overload the magazine by up to 40 shots maximum.
This is what the catalyst can do after its update on January 9, 2024: The catalyst then adds +15 additional points to the range, +5 to stability, and +5 effectiveness in the air. Achieving kills or picking up a remnant grants additional range, handling, and mobility.
What does the community say about the catalyst? Players are excited at every corner of the loot shooter. On Reddit, players comment with the following statements:
- GSAV_Crimson: ‘This is exactly what I wanted from the catalyst. It’s literally perfect.’
- iconorcz: ‘I’ve mainly played this since Forsaken; it looks like nothing will change. What a catalyst, nothing is better than being overwhelmed with stats.’
- Neat_On_The_Rocks: ‘OH YES. With ‘The Final Shape,’ they are striving for 100% nostalgia. They’re intentionally introducing an OG Thorn meta alongside The Final Shape. Honestly, I think it’s brilliant. This catalyst is everything the Thorn needed. […].’
But even experts like Aztecross already know that Thorn will be meta in Season 23. So if you occasionally play your rounds in PvP, you should keep the Thorn in mind. It will be a strong option, especially if you want to apply pressure on your opponents.
What do you think of the catalyst? Do you think the upcoming change is strong, or did you expect more? Let us know in the comments!
