Marcel “MontanaBlack” Eris (36) has tens of thousands of viewers on Twitch, but comparatively few are currently subscribing to his paid subscription (Sub). What’s going on?
What’s going on with MontanaBlack? The 36-year-old remains one of the biggest streamers on German-speaking Twitch. When he streams, an average of 20-30,000 people tune in (via SullyGnome).
However, when it comes to the number of subs, i.e., the paid subscriptions on his channel, MontanaBlack is far behind. This was noticed by a X user who shared an overview from the analysis site Twitch-Tracker on September 16, 2024, in which MontanaBlack doesn’t even appear in the top 10. He asks: “What happened to Monte?”
MontanaBlack is no longer number 1
What do the numbers say? MontanaBlack was long the number 1 in German Twitch. The now 36-year-old made a name for himself internationally with content on Fortnite, FIFA, and gambling. In 2022, MontanaBlack was dethroned by EliasN97: The younger streamer surpassed him in “watched hours” and “average viewers.”
But even though MontanaBlack is no longer the undisputed number 1, he remains one of the biggest streamers on German Twitch. In terms of “average viewers,” he still reliably lands in the top 5 (via SullyGnome).
However, he currently ranks only 11th in Germany in terms of subs – according to TwitchTracker, that’s still over 11,000 subs. So the money for his luxury cars shouldn’t run out too soon – nevertheless, others seem to earn significantly more on Twitch.
Niche streamers with active communities benefit
Who are the big winners? Among the 10 German-speaking streamers according to TwitchTracker that currently have the most subs are some usual suspects like EliasN97, Papaplatte, and Gronkh.
Others, measured by these metrics, may be less well-known, but still have an incredible number of subs. Among them are:
- Zarbex in 2nd place with nearly 35,000 subs – he has been skyrocketing on Twitch since the beginning of the year
- Metashi12 in 5th place with 17,100 subs – a WoW streamer known for his annual charity event
- Sintica in 6th place with 17,000 subs – a DJ who was considered one of the highest-earning women on Twitch years ago
- NoWay in 7th place with 16,000 subs – a true LoL streamer who is secretly one of the biggest German streamers
- Anastasia_Rose in 9th place with 13,300 subs – a Bundeswehr nurse who is also active as a DJ on Twitch
- BastiGHG in 10th place with 12,000 subs – A Minecraft streamer who streams an incredible amount and is also closely friends with Papaplatte
These mentioned streamers are by no means small fish, but are significantly less represented in the mainstream than MontanaBlack. Instead, they have their specific niches, such as LoL, Minecraft, or music, where they are huge, but likely have fewer people aware of them outside of those niches.
MontanaBlack streams comparatively little
What has happened? Of course, it’s not possible to say for certain why MontanaBlack currently has fewer subs than Zarbex or Sintica. However, there are several factors that could play a role:
- MontanaBlack has always streamed comparatively little, and in recent months even less than usual. The 36-year-old seems to have little enthusiasm for the current gaming landscape and has also faced swatting incidents. It could be that his fans enjoy tuning in when he is live, but prefer to leave their subs with more active streamers, where they get “more” for their money.
- Subs do not necessarily equate to a streamer’s popularity, but rather reflect how well someone can engage their community. High viewer numbers do not automatically mean that as many people will also subscribe.
- According to some comments on X, MontanaBlack’s displayed wealth could also play a role. His expensive cars are visible in the background of his streams, and everyone knows that he has made it financially and doesn’t need the money, they say. So, why would one subscribe?
Despite everything, MontanaBlack remains one of the most relevant German streamers, whose name many who do not actively follow Twitch have likely heard.
