The Anjanath is likely to be your first major challenge in Monster Hunter: World. It has a lot of health points and delivers heavy hits. Our guide will tell you how to deal with this creature and what its weaknesses are!
The Anjanath is one of the large enemies in the Ancient Forest. You first encounter it on your way to Astera, the great city in Monster Hunter: World. In the cinematic sequence, you barely manage to escape from the beast.
As the story progresses, you will come across the monster again – and this time you must face it in battle. Even though the beast looks sluggish, it can strike at lightning speed and inflict significant damage.
So that you don’t risk failing the quest, we have gathered some useful tips and tricks that will make the fight easier for you! But before we start, here is the briefer summary of the key points and weaknesses of Anjanath.

How do I prepare for the weaknesses of Anjanath?
Which spots you should attack on Anjanath: Due to its shape and movements, you will mostly be hanging onto its arms and legs, but try to focus on its head and tail as soon as the opportunity arises. The tail can even be severed. This is a significant weakness of Anjanath.
How you can prepare for the fight: Anjanath is weak to water (3). In the story, you have already encountered the Jyuratodus (Wildspire Waste), from which you can farm water parts. This allows you to build a water weapon. If you don’t have any water parts, Thunder (2) and Ice (2) are also good choices. It is advised against using Dragon (1) and Anjanath is immune to Fire (0). The stars indicate the effectiveness of elements against a particular monster. 3 stars have a high impact, so in this case, water. A red cross means that the monster is immune to that element.
Which status effects are effective against Anjanath? You can use Poison (2), Paralysis (2), Sleep (2), and Stun (2). Tip: With Thunderbugs (made from Thunder Beetles), you can blind Anjanath. If you hit the bugs with your weapon, a bright flash occurs and Anjanath cannot move for a short time because it is confused.
Which weapons and armor are effective against Anjanath? You should choose weapons that provide maximum mobility. Dual blades or insect glaives are good options. For armor, focus on high fire resistance and defense. The bone armor is a safe choice. For buff food, Mega Potions are a must-have; otherwise, the same values apply as for the armor.
Where can I find Anjanath? In the Ancient Forest
The next part helps you understand the individual battle phases better and which strategies could lead to success.
The Fight Against Anjanath – The Attacks
The best recipe for success in a Monster Hunter title is always observing the enemy. What attacks does the monster use? How are the movements structured? The Anjanath is large and looks heavy, but can quickly cover larger distances.

The Anjanath prefers to attack with its large maw, but can also kick with its claws if you are under it. Those who attack the tail from behind can be hit hard by it.
The monster becomes truly dangerous when it raises a crest on its head and two ‘wings’ on its back. In this phase, you should keep your distance – the beast’s strength and speed increase in this state, and its attacks become harder to predict.
From time to time, Anjanath breathes fire, and you must definitely keep your distance to avoid being set ablaze. Anjanath has two different fire attacks:
- A widespread fire breath with short range or
- A suddenly expended blast in all directions with long range
In the final phase of the fight, Anjanath enters a kind of rage mode. This is the most dangerous part; it uses all attacks in quick succession and rampages through the arena. Here, great caution is required!

The Fight Against Anjanath – The Equipment
We do not want to make a general weapon recommendation, but you should choose weapons that provide maximum mobility. With the dual blades, you are fast, and the combination of sword and shield, as well as the insect glaive, are also good options.
Your armor should have fire resistance. For this, you can relatively early in the game build the bone armor, which has fire resistance. Just go through the bone piles located in the Ancient Forest and the Wildspire Waste, and you should be able to complete the set quickly.
Since the defense values of the armor are not outstanding, invest in armor spheres to further enhance them.

The Anjanath is sensitive to the water element. Take advantage of this weakness by choosing weapons that possess the water element. Additionally, you can equip your Palico with a weapon that has the water element to inflict additional damage!
Also, stock up on healing items. After starting the quest, you can use the chest in the camp. In it, you will find first aid items. Additionally, craft healing potions and mega potions. You can make healing potions from herbs, which are found everywhere.
For mega potions, in addition to normal healing potions, you need to find honey. This is rarer than herbs but provides a higher healing effect. Also, remember to eat a dish in the camp that boosts your attributes.

If you have equipped the bone armor, choose a dish that increases defense. Those who are quick to dodge can also choose a meal that boosts attack power.
The Fight Against Anjanath – The Battle Flow and Weaknesses
After starting the quest, you must first find the hunk. The scoutflies will help you follow the trail as soon as you stumble upon a footprint of the beast. Once you locate Anjanath, it all starts.
Observe the beast’s movements. Stay to the side and try to attack the tail. However, be careful, Anjanath can strike you with its tail. If you attack the tail long enough, it will fall off.
From this point, you can safely attack Anjanath from behind. With a well-timed attack from the air, you can mount the monster and hit it from above. Attack at the right moment, and don’t get thrown off!

The key to success: Practice patience! Don’t get overzealous and land two or three solid hits instead of constantly hammering at the beast and getting knocked down yourself. Anjanath can execute devastating attacks in no time, even if your health bar is full, the beast can knock you out in no time.
- If you become unconscious three times, the quest is lost, and you must start over.
- Under normal circumstances, you should have no problem with the 50-minute time limit, so don’t rush!
Strike from the side multiple times and roll to safety. If the monster raises its crest on its head, you should keep your distance and try to stay behind Anjanath, because now it will attack you with fire attacks that can knock you out on a full hit.
If you get hit by its fire breath, it may happen that you start burning. In this state, you continuously lose health (indicated by the pulsing red health bar). You can free yourself from this debuff by executing a dodge roll!

If you have great problems with its fire breath, attack its throat. If you inflict enough damage, Anjanath will no longer be able to perform its fire attacks. However, you must proceed with great caution; its maw has a large reach!
It can also happen that its throat starts glowing red. This is your chance! Because if you hit the throat, it will knock the hunk off its feet, and it will be safely attackable for a short time!
The dinosaur becomes really dangerous when it raises its head crest and back wings – in this rage phase, you must be very careful; Anjanath deals more damage, is faster, and its movements are not as easy to predict.
Use the battle breaks for regeneration
The Anjanath does not stay in one spot continuously – if it runs away from you, use the breaks to heal, sharpen your weapon with the whetstone, and gather herbs and honey for mega potions if you have run out of them.
However, don’t take too much time – if Anjanath has retreated to its nest, it regenerates health, which must be prevented! So don’t let the breaks become endless. Always keep an eye on your mission timer at the top left!
Use the environment to your advantage!
Don’t just focus on Anjanath; also pay attention to the terrain you are in. You can often use this to your advantage:
- Anjanath can get tangled in ivy vines on the ground and be knocked down. Remember such positions and lure the beast there. You can do this by placing a bait (such as raw meat) at the appropriate spot.
- In caves, large boulders often hang from the ceiling that you can loosen with thrown weapons. If Anjanath is directly underneath, you can inflict significant damage with the stones.

- In some areas of the Ancient Forest, there are large, cup-like plants on the ground, called poison cups. In the heat of battle, these can be hit and spread a poisonous load over a large area. Be sure to avoid stepping on these purple-marked areas – otherwise, you will be poisoned!
Additionally, you should avoid facing Anjanath in tight corridors and small spaces. Especially in rage mode, you may find yourself back at camp faster than you would like. Always lure Anjanath to larger areas to have enough space to dodge.
Definitely avoid the Rathalos!
Often, Anjanath is in the vicinity of a much more dangerous opponent: the Rathalos. Trust me, you do not want to challenge that at this point in the game. What Rathalos can do to Anjanath is astounding.
I have seen damage numbers well over 1000 that Rathalos inflicted on Anjanath. You do not want to get caught in the crossfire. If Rathalos appears (a giant, winged beast), keep your distance until Anjanath has retreated.

If Rathalos is positioned between you and Anjanath, take a detour if in doubt. Make sure that Rathalos does not become aware of you!
The final phase of the fight
If you have injured the monster so severely that a skull symbol appears on the mini-map, you are almost there. Anjanath will now limp back to its nest to regenerate.
Now, the hardest phase of the fight begins.
- In a deathly panic, the beast will spew fire about, jump wildly around, and execute all attacks randomly.
- Keep your distance and land only a few hits to avoid getting caught in its clutches.
- Heal if necessary and remain patient. Sooner or later, the monster will fall and present you with the opportunity to forge one of the best armors available at this point in the game.
- Congratulations – you have taken down the first truly tough beast of the game!
