Will upcoming MMORPGs still have a subscription?
Developers are generally hesitant to release MMORPGs that require a subscription. While it can work, as Final Fantasy 14 shows, it’s a risky endeavor. However, some studios are willing to try and have already announced games that will require a monthly base fee to play.

Camelot Unchained
Mark Jacobs, former designer of the cult MMORPG Dark Age of Camelot, is currently working on Camelot Unchained. This is a PvP-heavy online role-playing game focused on conquests and large battles. PvE plays almost no role here. You join one of three factions: Arthurian, Tuatha Dé Danann, or Vikings. The three parties are in a war. Accordingly, everything revolves around battles between players.
Camelot Unchained relies on a subscription to avoid annoying players with paid extras or an in-game shop. Those who subscribe know that they can do everything in the game and receive everything they need to play effectively. Camelot Unchained could be released in 2018, but development is currently taking a long time.
