Rift
The classic online role-playing game Rift has an astounding number of classes. You can embody as many as 52 different hero types. And if that’s not enough: You can combine up to three classes and expand further. A feast for optimizers and crafters!
Callings, Souls, and Destinies
To help you find your way, the classes in Rift are divided into so-called “Callings.” These are broad categories that roughly correspond to the 5 archetypes from the first paragraph. There are:
- Primalists: These classes handle the primal forces of the world
- Warriors: Here you find bruisers of all kinds
- rogues: Fragile damage dealers are found here
- Mages: These classes can deal damage but also protect
- Clerics: Most support and healing classes are found here
In every calling, there are dozens of classes that can be tank, damage dealer, or supporter. For example, among the warriors, there is the “Liberator” who can heal. Or the “Mystical Ranger” who is actually a mage but shoots arrows and plays almost like a class from an action MMO.
So Many Possibilities
The individual classes within the callings are referred to as “Souls” in Rift. You can switch them at any time at an NPC and even save configurations. However, an even cooler feature is one that allows you to combine up to three souls into a “Destiny.”
Some of them are already suggested by the game. For example, the three warrior souls “Paragon,” “Warlord,” and “Riftblade” create a “Butcher.” This class configuration is particularly good at fighting individual enemies.
However, you can also simply combine souls freely and create your perfect build that adapts to your playstyle.
On the next page, there is a game that features well over 100 classes!
