A new MMORPG called Soul Ark is currently being developed in Korea, which has a lot in common with Ragnarok Online.
Ragnarok Online managed to become a cult MMORPG after its release in 2002. What many may not know is that the MMO is based on the Ragnarok manga by Lee Myung-jin. And this very author is currently developing a new online role-playing game that, in turn, draws on the backstory of his manga.
Ragnarok Online as a mobile game with a different name?
Initial Korean footage shows that Soul Ark does indeed bear significant similarities to Ragnarok Online, although similarities to League of Angels cannot be denied. The game is played from an isometric perspective. You control your 2D hero through a colorful landscape, interact with NPCs, team up with other players, and when you encounter an enemy, you are taken to a special battle screen where you apparently fight turn by turn and use your abilities to quickly achieve victory. At least this can be somewhat inferred from the trailer, which is entirely in Korean.
Information is still scarce
As a result, information about the MMO is also scarce. Soul Ark will be released for mobile devices – whether a PC or browser version is also planned is currently uncertain. The developers are using new technology called “Spine 2D,” which aims to make parts of the game look as if they are in 3D.
Further information about Soul Ark is expected at the Korean online gaming fair G-Star, which will take place from November 17 to 20.
By the way, Soul Ark has nothing to do with Tree of Savior. The latter is indeed produced by the designer of Ragnarok Online but draws on its own backstory that has nothing to do with Ragnarok.
