Cooler Master has launched its first gaming mouse, the MM830, which is specifically aimed at MMO players. In terms of features, it does a few things differently.
Control pad instead of button grid: While other MMO mice, such as the Corsair Scimitar Pro or the Razer Naga Trinity, rely on having a lot of extra buttons, the MM830 comes with only four.
In Cooler Master’s new mouse, the extra buttons are integrated as a control pad (or “D-Pad”) on the left side of the thumb rest and can be freely assigned macros thanks to onboard storage.
Mouse with display: In addition to the common RGB lighting found in gaming mice (4 zones), a small OLED display is also integrated on the left side, which is a quite rare feature.
The small screen has a resolution of 96 x 64 pixels and can be customized to display DPI values, CPU usage of the PC, and more or simply to show various graphics.
Further technical specifications:
- a total of 8 programmable buttons are available in 5 profiles (via software)
- the adjustable resolution of the optical sensor is up to 24,000 dpi at a polling rate of 1,000 Hz
- thanks to Omron switch technology, the buttons are said to be especially durable (20 million clicks)
- the scroll wheel offers a 2-way operation
- PBT plastic is said to protect the top and main buttons particularly well against wear
- the connection cable (USB) is covered with a textile sheath
Price and availability: The Cooler Master MM830 is expected to be available immediately at a suggested retail price of 79.99 euros. In the price comparison at Geizhals.de, it is currently listed from around 62 euros plus shipping costs, but not available for immediate shipment. It was originally presented at CES 2018.
Is the mouse worth it? Considering the technical specifications of the sensor and others, the model should be beyond any doubt regarding its gaming suitability.
However, the only four extra buttons might be too few for some MMO enthusiasts. On the other hand, we also often hear voices about too many buttons, especially since MMOs nowadays rely more on combos and fewer skills.
In this respect, the number of four buttons could also simply represent an ideal addition to the keyboard, without losing their effectiveness and living their existence as an unwanted appendage.
Whether the OLED display in everyday use is nothing more than a nice gimmick that you quickly forget is ultimately dependent on the user.
