In the community of Minecraft the best players regularly set speedrun records. In 2021, there was a cheating scandal involving the extremely popular YouTuber Dream: He was exposed as a cheater by speedrunner MinecrAvenger, but now his records are also being wiped from the books. Apparently, he has also been cheating in Minecraft – and for years.
What is the problem with these speedruns in Minecraft? Speedruns in Minecraft are about completing the game as quickly as possible:
- How fast one can really conquer Minecraft partly depends on luck. The speedrunner Dream had an extremely fast run in 2021. However, it was only possible because he had astronomically good luck: Dream got abnormally many blaze rods and ender pearls.
- Dream said: Statistically, it is very unlikely that he had this much luck, but even the most unlikely events do happen eventually.
- Later it turned out that Dream was not a lucky guy at all. He had manipulated his Minecraft to drop many more items than usual. However, Dream said: that it was an accident, he didn’t even know that these settings were active.
This is now the scandal: One of the speedrunners who exposed Dream as a cheater was MinecrAvenger.
However, he now had such incredible luck in a run that made his colleagues suspicious. The player found 769 obsidian in 290 chests: The odds for this, if calculated, were 1 in 28 billion. Oopsie.
Once the Minecraft investigators were on the trail of the speedrunner, they discovered that some things looked very suspicious. When they watched old videos of MinecrAvenger, he had runs that looked poorly edited – as if something illegal was definitely going on.
Convicted cheater apologizes to community
This is what the YouTuber himself says: He now says:
I have been banned by speedrun-com for impossible chests and too good an obsidian rate. That from two years ago is true, and I apologize to the speedrun community and to you.
The numerous records of the player have now been wiped from the books, just like Dream’s before.
By the way, the scandal didn’t harm Dream at all back then; he is bigger than ever. Especially when he decided to reveal his face, that was a huge thing on the internet.
His “Face Reveal” alone was seen by 14 million people – seems he didn’t cheat:
