What happened? The player Eyt_S published a small clip from his current Minecraft world. The clip titled “What did I do to deserve this, God?” starts off rather harmless. Eyt_S is currently renovating his base and replacing the floor. Peacefully, his cat is sitting next to the house while he enjoys a snack and works on the building. The snow is gently falling, and it couldn’t be more harmonious.
Then, without warning, a thunder strikes and directs a lightning strike near Eyt_S. Although the player is missed, the lightning strikes exactly on the cat. Moments later, the message appears that the cat has gone up in flames.
Staring in disbelief, Eyt_S looks at the sky while the small spot where his cat was sitting before is still smoldering a bit.
How likely is that? Even though the incident seems like extreme bad luck – it’s actually not that unlikely, as user ChocoMilkr1098 calculates in the subreddit. Depending on how long a thunderstorm lasts in Minecraft – between half a day and a full day – the probability of lightning striking exactly where the cat was increases. In the end, he concludes that the probability, depending on the duration of the thunderstorm, is between 1:1075 and 1:2124. In other words: The chance during a thunderstorm is between 0.09% and 0.047%.
There could have been protection: Particularly bitter is the fact that one could have protected themselves from the lightning strike. Since the big patch 1.17, there is the new material copper, from which players can build a lightning rod. It intercepts lightning and safely channels it into the ground, preventing fire from starting. Eyt_S apparently forewent this additional protection, and as a result, a cat had to pay with its life.
