Those who want more than one save slot in Metal Gear Survive will have to pay from Konami. Because additional character slots must be purchased with the in-game currency “SV Coins”. The second slot already costs $10 – and that in a Buy2Play game.
Long before the launch, Metal Gear Survive faced a lot of criticism from the outraged fans of the series. Accordingly, the launch trailer on Youtube received a massive 21,000 downvotes.
And it probably won’t stop there, because the base game not only costs €39.99, it also has an in-game shop with a comprehensive microtransaction system.
“Pay2Progress” system modeled after MGS V
Initially, you have access to only one character or safe slot. If you want to create a second save, you have to buy it for 1,000 SV Coins, which would be roughly €8.10.
Additionally, you can also buy booster packs in the shop that increase the productivity of your base and generally speed up various processes in the game.
This includes faster food production and higher amounts of battle points received, with which you can unlock new equipment. Direct interventions in the status values of player characters are also possible, even though they are “only” temporary.
The coins come in five different pack sizes:
- 100 SV Coins – $0.99
- 550 SV Coins – $4.99
- 1150 SV Coins – $9.99
- 3500 SV Coins – $29.99
- 6000 SV Coins – $49.99
No loot boxes or pay-to-win
In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine UK, producer Yuji Korekado emphasized that the microtransactions are not a “pay-to-win” system or loot boxes.
Instead, Korekado compared the microtransaction system of Metal Gear Survive to those from Metal Gear Online and MGSV: The Phantom Pain.
Since the game has not been on the market for long, it is still unclear how much the microtransactions will affect the gameplay.
