For one of the greatest directors in history, it was a lifelong dream, but the film turned out to be a colossal commercial failure, earning only a tenth of its costs.
Which film is it about? It is about Megalopolis by Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now). The 138-minute film was a passion project of Coppola and was released in theaters in September 2024. Featured stars include Adam Driver (Star Wars), Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad), Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) and Shia LaBeouf (Transformers).
The budget reportedly was around 120 million US dollars. However, the work only managed to earn 14.4 million dollars at the box office. As a result, Megalopolis has secured a spot on our list of the biggest flops of the cinema year 2024.
Coppola does not give up
What happens in 2026? According to a post by the star director on Instagram, Megalopolis is set to celebrate a comeback in select theaters around New Year’s: “I hope that Megalopolis becomes the focal point of discussions about improving society and humanity every New Year’s Day.”
Despite its poor box office performance and mixed reviews (the film has about 34 percent on rottentomatoes.com), Coppola seems convinced of the quality of his work.
How are film fans reacting to the announcement? On Reddit, there are already lively discussions regarding the announcement. Some are actually looking forward to seeing a Coppola film in theaters for New Year’s. Many others, however, anticipate another box office flop.
- Acceptable_Shine_738 says: “The first flop at the box office in 2026. What a start to the new year!”
- Commercial_Site622 points out the strong competition: “Competing against Avatar and Stranger Things? We will see.”
- Varolyn is more optimistic: “It will also briefly be the film with the highest box office earnings of 2026, so that speaks for it.”
To see Megalopolis, you don’t have to go to the cinema. The film is currently available on Netflix. Alternatively, you can rent or buy the film in various stores like Prime Video or Apple TV for a few euros.
