Wednesday is complaint time. And do you know what currently bothers me about the present? The future! At first glance, that sounds absurd, but let me explain: When I know what great game content awaits me in the future, I can hardly enjoy what I currently have.
The most prominent example for me right now is Hearthstone. I look forward to every card release, I am excited about the reveal of the old gods, and I am curious like a night elf ranger’s bow what cool decks can be created from the cards. Yet at the same time, every reveal of a new card lowers my motivation to play the game in its current state.
Don’t get me wrong, Hearthstone is not bad. But just knowing about the cards that will be coming soon makes the current cards so much duller and monotonous. It’s already a torture just to push myself through the daily quests so that I have enough gold at the start of “The Whisper of the Old Gods” to build some solid decks.
I have a similar problem with World of Warcraft: Legion. My last PvE goal, to defeat Archimonde on heroic to get the mount, was fulfilled by a friend, and now the game is… boring. And it’s really not. I would still have so many things to do, so many achievements to collect, and so many pet battles to fight that I could easily bridge the time until Legion. But still, I can’t bring myself to do it because I already know what awaits me in Legion.
I am aware of the fate of some characters like Tirion Fordring or Magni Bronzebeard, I know about the cool lore that will surround the Nightborne and I am looking forward to the quests concerning the artifact weapons, that everything that is “currently” in the game fades away for me more and more.
Perhaps I have simply become a victim of “new is always better”, but it is getting harder to enjoy what I currently have in front of me when I already know what will come soon. Of course, my job also somehow gets in the way, as writing spoiler-free articles for a gaming site is pretty pointless. And yet it bothers me to already know so much about what will be – but only in the future. And when that time comes, I will surely hear the first rumors about what awaits me next.
