With Thunderbolts, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) takes on its own version of the “Suicide Squad”. According to the trailer, the film is likely to be different from many of the recent Marvel projects.
Who are the Thunderbolts? Similar to DC’s Suicide Squad, they are a team of (former) supervillains. In the film, the colorful crew consists of:
- Winter Soldier
- Yelena Belova
- Red Guardian
- John Walker
- Taskmaster
- Ghost
- Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
- Bob?

What does the trailer show? Quite a lot, considering that Marvel’s English-language YouTube channel refers to it as a “teaser.” Yelena feels empty, aimless, and without a purpose – a sensation she tries to drown in work. However, something goes wrong.
In a strangely resembling warehouse, a fight breaks out between Yelena, John Walker, Taskmaster, and Ghost – and Bob is there too. The different characters still have no idea that they will soon be on the same side. Someone wants to get rid of them for good.
Two big question marks after the trailer are the affiliation of Bucky Barnes, the infamous Winter Soldier, and Bob’s role. Bucky isn’t always on good terms with the other Thunderbolts, and Bob seems to be hiding his true self.
Fans appreciate the new direction, love a little detail
How are fans reacting to the trailer? Thunderbolts is currently receiving very positive feedback, at least if you look at the comments on YouTube. Fans are excited that Marvel isn’t presenting the next big cosmic threat. The film feels more grounded, and the humor is subtler.
One scene that you might have missed at first glance is receiving special attention from fans. In it, the Winter Soldier is briefly seen taking his high-tech arm prosthesis out of a dishwasher. Whatever the reason may be, fans love the uncommented absurdity of this scene:
- Bajanprince67: “This guy really had his arm in the dishwasher. I’m not even mad at him.”
- hoof31: “Wakanda: We made you a damn arm that costs 2 billion dollars, and you’re putting it in the dishwasher. > Bucky: I set it to gentle”
When is Marvel’s Thunderbolts coming out? The film is set to be released in May 2025; the trailer does not provide a more specific date. The film’s rating is still pending, but Thunderbolts also doesn’t look like it will be a 16+ film.
The new direction of the film presented in the trailer also aligns with what one of the actors revealed in a Q&A session regarding Thunderbolts. You can read more about it in this article: After the MCU’s downfall: Marvel’s version of “Suicide Squad” aims to do everything differently
