Marvel chief explains why Robert Downey Jr. will never return as Iron Man

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, denied in an interview the rumors surrounding the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man. He also explained the reason why the Marvel hero will never make a comeback on the big screen.

There were rumors that Marvel plans to gather the Avengers once again for a major comeback. Supposedly, the original cast was to be considered for this.

However, Kevin Feige refuted the speculations (at least partially) in an interview with Vanity Fair on December 3, 2023, by stating clearly: Robert Downey Jr. will not return as Iron Man. There is also a good reason for that.

“We have all worked very hard for many years to reach this moment”

Tony Stark aka Iron Man sacrificed himself in an emotional scene at the end of Avengers 4: Endgame to save the universe from Thanos.

As Kevin Feige explained in the Vanity Fair article, a lot has been invested and worked long towards this special moment to give Iron Man a worthy conclusion.

It would diminish the drama of the moment too much to bring Tony Stark back mysteriously. Kevin Feige explained:

“We will preserve this moment and will not revisit it. We have all worked very hard for many years to reach this moment, and we would never want to make it magically undone.” (Source: Vanity Fair)

However, Kevin Feige’s statement does not rule out that we could still see one of the OG Avengers in one of the upcoming Marvel productions in the future.

Fans of Sam and Dean Winchester, on the other hand, can hold out hope for a return of the two brothers. At a convention panel, it sounded like the two main actors Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles were hoping for a comeback of their characters:
