Last year, the Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie was celebrated by fans. However, the actress was actually not the first choice for the role.
In 2023, Barbie became a massive success. The film adaptation featuring the Mattel plastic doll with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles was on everyone’s lips.

Margot Robbie delighted many fans by giving the iconic doll emotional depth. However, she was actually not the first choice for the role.
Three other stars could have been Barbie
The Barbie movie and its main cast went through a long development process. In 2009, the announcement came that a Barbie film was in the works. The project was overseen by Universal Pictures. Then, in 2014, Sony/Columbia Pictures acquired the film rights. The lead role of the Barbie film was to be taken by Amy Schumer (Trainwreck).
A few months later, however, the actress withdrew, citing scheduling conflicts with other projects.
In July 2016, Anne Hathaway (Interstellar) was then chosen as the new Barbie for the film adaptation. However, the project was never realized by Sony/Columbia Pictures.
So, in 2018, Mattel sold the rights to the Barbie film to Warner Bros, where Margot Robbie then grabbed the project as a producer.
As the actress revealed in an interview with Vogue Magazine, she actually had a completely different casting for the plastic doll in mind: Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot.
However, she was not available at the time. So, in the end, Margot Robbie stepped in and took on the lead role – with great success.
