ASUS introduced a huge curved monitor at Computex in Taiwan. It reminds one of Samsung’s well-known Odyssey series. The community is positively surprised.
Monitors have been getting larger for several years now, with some gamers even buying a big TV and connecting their gaming PC to it. Last year, Samsung made waves with a brilliant monitor.
Now ASUS has introduced a 49-inch QD-OLED monitor. The technical details sound promising at first, but some gamers are already worried that the device could be very expensive.
49-Inch QD-OLED Monitor with 4K Resolution and 144 Hz
Asus showcased a new 49-inch QD-OLED monitor at Computex. The new display comes with a resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 pixels. You can imagine it as if you were placing two WQHD monitors (1440p) side by side. ASUS opts for a 1,800R curvature to ensure that the user of the monitor has everything in view.
However, there is a weakness in the technical details compared to the competition: The QD-OLED model comes “only” with 144 Hz. The Odyssey Neo G9 for 2,200 Euros has a refresh rate of 240 Hz.
What will the monitor cost? So far, ASUS has not mentioned a price for the monitor. The Odyssey Neo G9 cost around 2,500 Euros at launch. The new gaming monitor from ASUS could cost similarly. For that amount of money, you could also buy a powerful gaming PC with a fast graphics card instead.
How are players reacting? Mostly positively. Some explain that they are looking forward to the new model, even though the price is likely to be quite high. Some comment (via reddit.com):
- “The specifications are great, but if they could just move away from the red-black, gamer bro, plastic Ferrari aesthetic, I would be thrilled. They have maintained it for the last 15 years, so I’m not optimistic.”
- “I have been waiting for something like this. The problem is, they will set the price unreasonably high, around 4,000 dollars.”
- This is great news. I have been wondering when someone would bring an OLED version to the market.
