The abbreviation OTP is often heard in streams for League of Legends (LoL) and is also read in the game’s chat. But what does it actually mean? We show you the explanation of what is behind the “One Trick Pony” in LoL.
This is what the term means: When you hear the term “OTP” in connection with LoL or similar games, it usually refers to a “One Trick Pony.” That is a player who mainly plays the same character and does not try out other champions.
In the community, such players often spark heated discussions. Find out here why it is good to be a One Trick Pony and what disadvantages it brings.
The Advantages of One Trick Ponies in League of Legends
This is what they do well: As an OTP, you specialize in one champion and play, with rare exceptions, only that one. The advantage is that you learn and master your champion very well. If you repeatedly play Yasuo, you have to face various opponents and can try out these matchups and learn from them.
If you then play your One Trick Pony after hundreds of matches, the chance is high that you are superior in direct duels against an opposing player.
If your One Trick Champion is also strong on the current patch, you contribute an important part to winning the match. Ideally, you know all the tricks and mechanics of your hero and understand how to play against the various counters and possibly even win against them, even though the counters may seem superior on paper.
What it can look like when players win hard as “OTP,” you can see in the following video by LibraLoL. Incredible kills are shown.
The Disadvantages of One Trick Ponies
This is what they do poorly: Players usually put everything on one card. If their champion is banned in a match, they either have to switch to another champion or leave the lobby. The disadvantage is that other players then have to wait for a new lobby.
If the OTPs switch to another character, it often means that they do not master that champion at all. This depends a lot on the ELO in which the OTPs play. In the lower ranks, players do not think much about alternative heroes and “take what is there.”
In case of doubt, OTPs have no experience with other champions and thus find themselves significantly behind the opponent in direct duels on the lane.
What do you think of One Trick Ponies in LoL? Do you think it’s good for players to focus on one champion and master it well, or are the disadvantages too great because they do not engage deeply with other champions?
