Riot Games has removed a popular feature from League of Legends with patch 14.19, which has disappointed many LoL players. MyMMO reveals what it’s all about.
What feature in LoL is it about? If you destroyed Wards, you used to get some experience points (XP) and gold for it. However, with patch 14.19, this mechanic has been removed.
Wards no longer grant experience points when they are destroyed. Riot Games believes that the gold reward alone is sufficient to make taking out Wards rewarding. Additional experience points are therefore no longer necessary.
Riot also states the following:
Wards no longer grant XP when killed. It was an insignificant and invisible mechanic that still had the potential to give the user of the ward a significant disadvantage, as enemies could reach level ups earlier. […]

Here is an overview of the changes:
- Wards (invisible): Previously, they granted 40 experience, now they grant none
- Vision modification: Previously, it granted 20 experience, now it grants none
- Other ward-like features such as Fiddlesticks’ scarecrow and zombie eye also grant no experience
Wards no longer provide experience, disappointing many players
What do players say? The players’ reactions to the change that Wards no longer give experience points are mostly negative. Many fans complain that Riot is simplifying
the game and removing mechanics that are based on deeper game knowledge.
Some players see this as a nerf for the support role. Others express general dissatisfaction with Riot’s balance team. Support players, in particular, are disappointed.
This is what players are saying:
- One writes on X:
I think it’s great that they simplify the game and abolish mechanisms that rewarded game knowledge […]
- Another writes on X:
Hm, I actually liked that. As a support, I often lose experience when I roam to remove Wards and fall behind in lane. The XP reward was a good way to balance that a bit
. - Another writes on X:
Sad day for a support player
. - And another writes on X:
The change is incredibly bad, holy
.
Why are players annoyed by this? Especially supporters are affected by the change. The role is responsible for placing most of the Wards on the map and primarily removes the enemy Wards to establish map control.
By removing the XP reward, many Support players feel disadvantaged. They often leave the lane to place Wards – or to destroy enemy Wards. However, by taking on this additional task, they miss out on experience points in the lane.
It remains to be seen whether Riot will make further changes in future patches to respond to player feedback. The new Worlds song Heavy Is The Crown
has been introduced by Riot Games, but fans say: The new music video for Worlds in LoL is cool, but has too much Linkin Park
