At an event for League of Legends, MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes got to check out some new content for the MOBA. Even though there was a new map and a new champion to see, an unassuming mini-game won his heart.
Riot has announced quite a lot of new things for League of Legends in the near future. In addition to a new champion that feels quite good and a new map for the ARAM mode, there will also be a new mini-game in the launcher.
In Battle of Koeshin, you face countless enemies as Xin Zhao or the new champion Yunara in a beat ’em up, and I was thrilled, even though I was only allowed to play one level.
The genre legend in beat ’em ups is Double Dragon. Even today, titles in the series are still being released:
A classic but good beat ’em up
How does Battle of Koeshin play? At an LoL event, I got to play the first level of Battle of Koeshin. In the well-known Spirit Blossom aesthetic, you have to fight your way through the level as Xin Zhao and Yunara.
The game is referred to as a metagame, and like The Demon’s Hand, you play it in the LoL launcher. Perfect, then, if you’re waiting for your friends.
You can move in four directions; additionally, you have an attack, jump, and special button with which you can perform various actions. You combine these to create different combos.
That alone felt quite good because all attacks flow into each other. Without much knowledge, you can try out quite a bit right away. If you manage to fulfill a certain combo chain, you can use an assist that activates random effects on the field, which you can also use for combos.
If you then utilize the quick swap between Yunara and Xin Zhao during combat, a flow emerges that is incredibly fun even against weaker enemies. However, it’s not all that easy; your positioning and timing are also important.
I had to play the first level 6 times in a row
I was so thrilled with Battle of Koeshin that I couldn’t stop playing the first level. After completing it for the first time, I immediately wondered how far I could push the combat system and dove right back in, trying new things and was pleasantly surprised.
Additionally, there was even a stopwatch in this play session that further motivated me to learn the game and play even more effectively and quickly. I played through the first level a total of 6 times in a row and wasn’t bored for a second because I just wanted to experiment with the combos.
Together with the beautiful comic aesthetics, I can’t wait to play the other levels on July 16, 2025. I can only hope that the mode will eventually be available outside the launcher as well, because just as a short event, it would be a pity for the competitive mini-game.
