Working where the sun never shines – literally
Not a direct “profession”, but a collection of professions: Underhives are structures beneath mega-cities, upon which large buildings are essentially just constructed. In the upper city, people often do not even know what is going on down there.
These underhives are enormous and already house millions or even billions of people. There is no sun and no real rain down there; what drips from the “sky” are often just waste waters and toxic substances from the upper world.
Consequently, life is very hard. Food often consists only of mutated fish from a toxic soup or discarded garbage. But even down there, there must be people who take care of things like the sewer system… For those interested, there are two games where you can explore underhives:
- Darktide is a coop shooter, where you are sent as a sort of “suicide squad” into the depths of an underhive to combat chaos corruption.
- The upcoming role-playing game Dark Heresy lets you travel to such a place as an Inquisitor to solve criminal cases.
The same goes for starships. While there are no “underhives” there, the “lower decks” look almost the same. Fresh air and natural light are absent in both places, and chemicals dominate the atmosphere. The Imperium is indeed mostly not beautiful.
