Fans of Left 4 Dead should pay attention. The original developer is working on a new co-op title – and you can already try it out.
When looking at gaming history over the past decades, there are a few titles that have remained particularly memorable. For co-op fans, there was basically no way around the original “Left 4 Dead”. The zombie shooter set new standards in co-op gameplay and even offered modes for competitive play.
Now Mike Booth, the original lead designer of Left 4 Dead, is back. And he already has a new game.
Left 4 Dead 2 came from Valve back then – and many felt it wasn’t as perfect as Mike Booth’s predecessor:
What was announced? Because Mike Booth still feels particularly connected to the Left 4 Dead community almost 17 years later, he shared his announcement there first: He is working with Bad Robot Games on a new game and is looking for players.
What kind of game is it? There are not many details about the game yet. The post only indicates that it is a “co-op game for 4 players” that “builds on the foundations that made Left 4 Dead so special”.
He continues: “If you liked the teamwork, tension, and replayability of my previous games, then you will find this one interesting as well. It expands the co-op formula in ways I have wanted to explore for a long time.”
Is the game a direct sequel to Left 4 Dead? No. It is already evident from the various posts on Reddit that it will not be a “Left 4 Dead 3”. According to the community manager of Bad Robot Games, the game will be “nothing to do with Left 4 Dead”. While this may be a letdown for many, developer Mike Booth is known for his love of co-op titles – and that alone already generates excitement among fans.
When can it be played? The new game is certainly still a few years away and is currently in an “early phase of development”. However, those who want can already sign up for an initial playtest and perhaps get a small glimpse of what is to come in just a few weeks. If you’re interested, you can sign up for a playtest on the Bad Robot Games page and be placed on the waiting list. However, it is still unclear when it will start.
The spots will also be limited, as they want to invite only “a limited number of players”. The feedback from these tests will be of great importance and will shape how the final game looks in the end.
Why is Left 4 Dead so popular? What makes Left 4 Dead so special even today is its strongly pronounced co-op aspect. Instead of just shooting zombies together, players were heavily reliant on each other. The special infected often had an ability to completely take out a player character. Only help from others could save you.
Co-op was thus not just desired but essential. It was all the more satisfying when a well-rehearsed team carved its way through the zombie hordes and could prove to friends every few seconds: I got you, I’m watching out for you.
This will not be “Back 4 Blood”
The response to this announcement has been overwhelming. Even though a few voices complain that the game will not be a direct sequel to Left 4 Dead, there is great confidence that Mike Booth’s team will create another co-op hit – at least there is a very positive outlook.
However, some are concerned that they might just be riding on the good name of Left 4 Dead, as others have done in the past. Particularly Back 4 Blood, which saw itself as a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, is often cited as a negative example – a co-op shooter that could not replicate the success, even though we found it relatively good.
However, many rightly point out that hardly any of the original developers of Left 4 Dead worked on Back 4 Blood, but with Mike Booth, a true veteran is working on the new game. One can be curious about what kind of co-op experience awaits us – and when the release is scheduled.
