In January 2023, update 3.4 for Genshin Impact is coming. A leak now shows a new boss that will appear in the desert region of Sumeru. And players are not thrilled.
About this boss: On the Chinese site Douyin, a user posted a short leak video about a new boss in Genshin Impact. This boss is supposedly coming with patch 3.4, which is expected to be released in mid-January 2023.
The video was uploaded shortly thereafter on reddit. Here you can watch it:
The boss is the “Wind-Bitten Sandworm,” which, according to the leak, will appear in the desert area of the new Sumeru region. While the video does not show any attacks from the monster, its movement patterns are clearly recognizable.
The worm moves under the desert sand surface and occasionally surfaces. This provides the player with a short window of time to deal damage before the worm disappears back underground.
These reactions exist: In the comments under the reddit video, enthusiasm about the new boss is rather limited. Many players are reminded of the boss Haftvad, which is considered an extremely annoying boss fight.
Once the worm disappears below the surface, it becomes immune to any damage. This leads to frustrating situations like in the leak video, where a complete ult attack by Scaramouche misses because the worm dove at the same moment.

There are particularly strong concerns that the boss could also appear in the Wound Abyss at the end. In the challenges there, time plays a significant role. It’s important to deal a lot of damage and to defeat the enemies quickly.
This could become a problem with the new worm boss, as it repeatedly becomes invulnerable by submerging underground.
But remember, this is a leak. It is not guaranteed that the worm will come into the game in this form, if at all.
Additionally, this is coming in update 3.4: Unlike the worm, 2 new characters have already been confirmed for update 3.4. HoYoverse introduced the Sumeru character Alhaitham during the Game Awards. Furthermore, the Dendro 4-star character Yaoyao, who comes from Liyue, is also coming.
The update is expected to release in mid-January. Fans estimate it should be on January 16, assuming HoYoverse adheres to the previous release schedule.
