Streamer Ludwig Ahgren goes live on an unknown Twitch channel to see how difficult it is to succeed as a small streamer.
Streamer Ludwig Ahgren has 3.5 million followers on Twitch, and an average of 11,707 people watched his streams last year (Source: SullyGnome). He is one of the largest streamers internationally, and no matter what he streams, he will have viewers for every stream.
Now he took on an experiment: Ludwig created a new Twitch channel, “RetiredAthlete32”, to see if it was really luck to succeed on the platform. The goal was to have at least one viewer in the chat writing. His experiment lasted 4 hours and 43 minutes, during which he tried various methods and realized one important thing.
What did Ludwig understand? Ludwig quickly realized that he derives his entertainment value mainly from his Twitch chat. The questions or comments that viewers write in the chat are summarized by Ludwig, and he responds to them, providing his own entertainment.
With his new Twitch channel, he had no followers and no viewers writing in the chat. This led to another realization for Ludwig: When a stream has no viewers, the potential viewer sees it and deliberately does not join the stream because there are no viewers in it.
Ludwig had to try quite a lot to attract attention.
What did Ludwig try out? Ludwig Ahgren initially set himself the goal of getting one follower. He achieved this quite quickly, but it was not a real person, but a bot that automatically followed his account. Then Ludwig understood that he should not stream in the Just Chatting category, as the competition there is too high for him to stand out.
Ludwig then wanted to revert to tried-and-true methods and played the game with which he initially started as a Twitch streamer: Smash Melee. Meanwhile, he took off his T-shirt and sat in a tank top in front of the camera to attract attention for the stream’s thumbnail.
Then Ludwig was not in his own stream for half an hour to get hot dogs. He brought one hot dog into his live broadcast to show how quickly he could eat it (16 seconds, by the way).
Nothing helped until Ludwig finally did a pack opening of One Piece and wrote “Giveaway” in the title of the stream. Lured by the title, two viewers finally came and wrote in Ludwig’s chat. His goal was thus achieved.
Several months ago, Ludwig returned to Twitch after streaming exclusively on YouTube for over 2 years. During this time, he realized that he needed to change something about his content.
