Superman is known for being very strong and nearly invincible. But equally famous is his greatest weakness: Kryptonite. A new story breaks with this old tradition.
What is Superman’s greatest weakness? The hero hails from the planet Krypton, and the radioactive mineral Kryptonite also comes from there. If Superman is exposed to this material, he becomes severely weakened and can even die.
It is not the only weakness of the man of steel, as other things like magic also cause his powers to fail. However, Kryptonite is certainly the most well-known and has always been a popular narrative device to limit Superman’s power.
A new comic, however, breaks this rule and introduces an object that removes any threat posed by Kryptonite.

A glove provides a solution
What kind of comic is this? In the series Superman Unlimited, the titular hero and his family are actually facing a major problem. An asteroid has crashed to Earth, released large amounts of Kryptonite, and spread all over the planet.
In principle, it would be difficult for the Kent family to be active on Earth under these circumstances and take down villains – because they could rely on the existing Kryptonite at any time to stop Superman.
However, thanks to the character Steel, this does not happen. The hero is an ally of Superman and excels mainly in his great talent in engineering and weaponry. Thanks to his ingenuity, he creates a glove in Superman Unlimited #7 that makes Kryptonite practically harmless.
Any radiation is nullified – at least that’s the theory. In the comic, Jon Kent, Superman’s son, tests the glove for its effectiveness. He manages to deflect a series of Kryptonite missiles with it. An important moment for Superman’s family, as the great and well-known weakness was eliminated with a simple trick.
Once again, a glove plays an important role in a well-known comic universe – just think of Thanos and his Infinity Gauntlet, which is a whole lot more powerful. With it, the great villain from the rival Marvel can become omnipotent, provided all six stones are placed in the glove.
How Superman’s enemies will react to this new invention remains to be seen. It is also uncertain how fans of the hero will accept the break with the tradition that has lasted over 80 years.
It will be exciting to see whether the glove establishes itself beyond this comic series, or whether Kryptonite will remain a weakness for a while longer. A special skill is something one would not attribute to the man of steel: Superman can do almost anything, but no one has brought his most absurd ability to the big screen yet
