In the state of Texas, more than 4,000 positions are to be replaced by AI. This aims to save money and simplify work. However, enthusiasm is limited, as the software still seems to be error-prone.
Artificial intelligence repeatedly causes excitement. As the colleagues from the English-language magazine The Verge report, the US state of Texas wants to introduce a new regulation to replace humans with AI: Currently, state exams are evaluated by humans, but that is supposed to change.
Exams will be taken over by AI and are to replace 4,000 positions
What is changing in Texas? In the future, AI will be responsible for evaluating state exams in Texas, which will reduce the number of examiners from 6,000 in 2023 to less than 2,000 in 2024. The government promises savings of 20 million euros.
Specifically, the artificial intelligence should evaluate the students’ skills in reading, writing, science, and social studies in the future. The problems are allegedly supposed to be limited because the AI has been trained with 3,000 answers from previous exams.
What are the reactions? The Director of the Texas Education Agency (TEA), Jose Rios, stated that the agency wants to retain as many constructed, open-ended responses as possible, but the evaluation takes an incredible amount of time. With AI, they aim to save a lot of time and money.
However, not everyone is caught up in the agency’s enthusiasm. The Superintendent of the Lewisville Independent School District, Lori Rapp, stated that her district saw a “drastic increase” in constructed responses that were rated zero points. Here, the automatic system was tested for the first time.
Rapp explained that it is currently unclear whether the test questions were faulty or if the AI made errors. This still needs to be examined.
Replacing employees with AI is controversial and rarely well-received
What does the current situation look like? It is not uncommon for companies to replace their employees with AI. A good AI can take on a lot of work and replace people. Companies then like to talk about “cost optimization.” More and more people report that they are losing their jobs to AI or are receiving fewer orders because artificial intelligence is taking over these tasks.
Are there secure jobs? The head of ChatGPT explained in an interview which occupations cannot be replaced by AI. In total, he thought of 34 professions that are safe from artificial intelligence. In addition to bus drivers and hairdressers, there are also some other, less well-known jobs:
