What to expect in the new DLC: Chapter 33 “Atlantis” of DC Universe Online will take you into the realm of Aquaman. There is much to do here:
- Atlantis is a large-scale episode with a major event. You will experience these events regardless of your hero’s level.
- The chapter will feature new and returning heroes and villains, including Aquaman, Mera, Aqualad, Ocean Master, Corum Rath, Murk, and more.
- The storyline offers a series of single-player and multiplayer adventures taking place for the first time in the underwater realm of Atlantis.
- The chapter brings new rewards, including new gear, styles, base items, and feats.
- There is a new large city to explore
- The DLC is approximately as extensive as eight regular updates
- The battle against a massive sea monster is the highlight
- In the story, you either team up with Aquaman and Mera to protect Atlantis from the evil Corum Rath or align yourself with the dark Ocean Master
This is what makes Atlantis special: The new DLC offers a unique feature – swimming. The question arises how well this will be implemented since many MMOs have tried to introduce swimming and diving, often with poor results.
- You must navigate the waters while swimming, which represents a new mode of movement
- A new lighting system is intended to create a sense of depth in the sea
- New animations have been created for swimming
A DLC in the wake of the movie?
What do the DLC Atlantis and the movie Aquaman have in common? Essentially, the DLC and the film are standalone entities. The stories are not related.
- DC Universe Online is capitalizing on the hype surrounding the Aquaman film to gain attention
- The DLC must be convincing because many may return to DC Universe Online due to the film and want to experience something epic here
- Two stories had to be written, depending on which side the players choose
Why the DLC is so important: DC Universe Online launched in 2011. It has since become a rather “unremarkable” MMO. It has a loyal fan base, but it is not truly successful anymore. Furthermore, the studio “Daybreak Games” has been hit hard after some controversies.
So, a DLC for DC Universe Online that can launch alongside a major movie on the same theme is just right. This could bring the online game back into the spotlight for players.
When does Atlantis release? The DLC will be released on November 8 for PC, Xbox One, and PS4.
