James Cameron is a renowned director, whose films often revolve around future scenarios. He himself sees our real world threatened, which is partly due to an invention that also appears in the film Terminator.
Who is James Cameron? The director made a name for himself with action-packed science fiction films. Primarily “Terminator,” “Aliens,” or “Avatar,” but he has also impressed with other stories like “Titanic.”
Especially “Terminator” is a film that is becoming increasingly relevant, mainly due to the major theme of AI. The film begins with a prologue showing the future on Earth in 2029. The machines have nearly exterminated humanity. What was pure science fiction in 1984, according to Cameron, is evolving into a scenario that cannot be ruled out.
AI is one of three existential threats that he believes exist today for us humans.
Threat and Hope at the Same Time
What does Cameron say? In a new interview with the magazine Rolling Stone, the director spoke about the current situation in the world and mentioned three threats:
I feel that we are at a turning point in human development, where we are confronted with three existential threats: climate change and the general destruction of nature, nuclear weapons, and superintelligence.
Especially artificial intelligence is a field where nobody knows where it will develop currently. According to Cameron, its use is not without dangers:
I believe that there is still the danger of an apocalypse à la Terminator, when you combine AI with weapon systems, even down to nuclear weapon systems, nuclear defense counterattacks, and all those things.
Cameron hopes that people are smart enough not to relinquish control completely, but to try to keep AI in check. However, he sounds less hopeful when he notes that humans are fallible and often make mistakes.
Nevertheless, Cameron states, AI could provide an answer to the other threats. However, he does not have specific solutions either.
It is clear that AI can be a powerful tool, which, however, must be used thoughtfully. We are certainly still a bit far from the horror scenario from “Terminator,” but the technology should be taken seriously nonetheless.
James Cameron sums it up nicely when he says: “We must always consider every technology as potentially dangerous and potentially helpful.”
