Rockstar, the studio behind GTA 6, recently announced the dismissal of around 34 employees due to “gross misconduct”. An insider has now revealed the relevant chats of the discussions primarily responsible on Discord.
What was shared in the Discord conversations? According to a report from the YouTube channel People Make Games, a non-dismissed insider made accessible chat logs that allegedly contributed to the dismissal of around 34 employees at GTA developer Rockstar.
The discussions reportedly took place on a Discord server of the representatives of the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB), which also includes the union of Rockstar. Members and employees of the studio were said to have primarily exchanged information regarding working conditions and the general workplace atmosphere. There were reportedly no leaks or exchanges of details that should have remained confidential.
Instead, the issue primarily revolved around a change in the company’s own Slack channels, where channels covering private topics such as pets or leisure activities were removed, as the employer deemed them to restrict productivity. This led to considerable uproar among the company’s employees and vibrant discussions on Discord.
The problem was reportedly less about the content of the messages themselves. Instead, it seems that a specific detail led to the dismissals.
Internal email may be responsible for dismissals
What does the insider say led to the dismissals? The report further states that it is believed that the sharing of an internal email on this very topic was the trigger for the dismissals. Emails were generally only accessible in the office, and the one that announced these changes to Slack was sent out just before the end of the workday.
As a result, some employees reportedly shared parts of the email with their colleagues on Discord, initiating the discussion. Subsequently, at least one employee is said to have approached upper management and arranged for the management to gain access to the Discord server. Shortly thereafter, dismissals were made that affected the very employees who were believed to be involved in this conversation.
The timing of the sharing and the subsequent dismissals is also said to match suspiciously. According to IWGB President Alex Marshall, the union believes that the server is in a legally sound state and that no unauthorized information was shared there.
In light of these developments, People Make Games also reached out to Rockstar for a statement, which the channel claims was declined.
Due to the latest delay, the release of GTA 6 is planned for November 2026. However, an internal report indicates that this date may not hold, and another delay looms.
