One of the most popular characters from Final Fantasy appears in World of Warcraft. But Aerith meets her fate here in Azeroth as well – at least partially.
For over 20 years, the developers have hidden a lot of references to other games in Azeroth in World of Warcraft. One of the slightly more well-known Easter eggs is the NPC “Aerith Gainsborough,” who works as a flower seller in Dalaran – just like Aerith in the original Final Fantasy VII (in the German version, she was called “Aeris”).
However, when Dalaran is attacked in “The War Within,” Aerith also experiences the dark fate that is destined for her – at least if you don’t save her.
What happens to her in The War Within? During the intro quest of the expansion “The War Within,” you must evacuate the city of Dalaran rather spontaneously – because when chaos breaks out, the enemy is already about to devastate the city. Along the way, you can save various NPCs from dangerous situations while others are killed before your eyes.
One of these NPCs is Aerith. You will find her in one of the buildings once the evacuation of the city has begun and the Nerubians have sounded the attack.

What kind of scene is that? Even after many years, a scene from Final Fantasy VII is still etched into the memories of fans. Relatively mid-game, Aerith is murdered by the antagonist Sephiroth in a cutscene. He jumps from behind her and pierces her body with a large sword. This scene is considered one of the most famous and saddest in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.
Many fans may have been reminded of this scene. Because you can see Aerith in Dalaran on a small platform. There she appears to be dead on the ground, with a sword stuck in her. However, when you click on her, you can remove the sword. Aerith then stands up and comments with a “Phew, that was pretty close.”
After that, Aerith flees and joins the others to be evacuated from the city. Ultimately, upon completion of the quest, she is teleported to the Isle of Thorns along with the other survivors, thereby bringing her to safety for the time being.
Aerith is thus one of the survivors of the Dalaran disaster. It can be assumed that we will see her again. Maybe she will be selling flowers in Thornogal soon.
