Place 3: World of Warcraft
Yes, the tab-target system of WoW has aged and has chased many away from Azeroth for years. Personally, however, I believe there is no other game in the genre where I feel such control over what I am doing with my character in group challenges – whether healing, tanking, or dealing damage.
This surely has something to do with the fact that I have been playing WoW for almost 20 years. Muscle memory and all that. At the same time, though, WoW is backed by Blizzard, a developer known for putting a lot of polish into the core gameplay systems of its games. And you can still tell that in WoW today.
Currently, The War Within is going on in WoW:
The controls are wonderfully direct, the camera does what it’s supposed to do, mobile maneuvers happen without delay, and the skill bars are brimming with skills that I regularly use. All comparable titles like Final Fantasy XIV do not reach this quality in my opinion, which shows how difficult it is to achieve this level of perfection.

Place 2: Lost Ark
As an isometric MMORPG in the style of Diablo or Path of Exile, Lost Ark should actually have a hard time landing on this list. However, the developers at Smilegate somehow managed to perform the feat of transferring the powerful, direct combat feel of my number 1 into the distant battles of the iso-MMO.
New classes for Lost Ark that are also fun keep coming:
It doesn’t matter which class I have tried so far: all rely on beautifully animated movements and spectacularly staged abilities, and they feel incredibly satisfying. Most of the time, you beat through hordes of monsters like a berserker on swamp weed. In tricky challenges, however, timing and precise movements are of utmost importance.
This “easy to learn, hard to master” framework works wonderfully in Lost Ark. However, due to the perspective, there are minor deductions, so it doesn’t quite make it to number 1. Currently, it is particularly worthwhile to start with Lost Ark or return to Arkesia.
