That MMOs don’t always have to play out similarly is what Fastraune’s online game Project Nobody aims to prove. It’s not about level-ups and quests.
Project Nobody is more of a kind of psychological study, where the behavior of players and their influence on the game world take center stage. The MMO is still in a very early development phase. Therefore, there are no screenshots yet – in the post, we include images from games that are also developed with SpatialOS.
An MMO like no other
What is Project Nobody? The MMO aims to offer something new and should not be confused with MMORPGs like World of Warcraft. The game has little to do with that.
- You are a nobody and your only way to become a somebody is to submit to another player
- You become a henchman working for a more powerful player and collecting resources
- Half of everything you achieve in the game goes to your “master”
- In return, you are protected by this “master”
- Protection is important as there are many dangers in the game world such as wandering monsters and other players attacking you in open PvP
- Exploration is important to obtain valuable resources. However, the wilderness is very dangerous
- The master builds walls and towns with what his subjects provide him in income
- A society is supposed to emerge where dependencies are in focus
- The game is not about completing quests or improving the character but about changing the world and your status within it because you also want to become a somebody from a nobody
Huge worlds and social interaction
Wonder technology SpatialOS enables huge worlds: Project Nobody utilizes the highly praised SpatialOS technology to create a huge, persistent world. There should be no planned wipes like in time-limited survival games, and there should never be a lack of space to build cities. Everything achieved and built will be stored “forever”.
The network technology enabling this comes from SpatialOS. Moreover, this technology allows the size of the game world to adapt to the players. This should prevent overcrowded or empty worlds. The world will also be continuously expanded. However, new areas will be dangerous and should only be visited by experienced players.
According to Fastraune, SpatialOS also enables smaller teams to implement large MMO projects. The technology is also utilized in other games, including the shooter Mavericks: Proving Grounds and in the MMO Worlds Adrift.
There are currently projects underway in China that are being developed with SpatialOS.
When will Project Nobody be released? Currently, there is no release date. The game is in a very early development phase. There are not even any screenshots or videos available yet.
What could Project Nobody mean for players? Project Nobody is not a typical MMORPG. However, it offers some elements of it, like combat, PvP, and resource gathering. Much more, it aims to create an online society that functions almost like a “real” one, with dependencies, protection, construction, development, and more.
The online game is a kind of social study that can show how players behave and develop in such an online world. That alone makes Project Nobody a highly interesting title.
