Breaking Bad is a popular and acclaimed series, which shocked many fans with its ending. There is, however, an alternative ending that is much more positive and connects two series.
Ending a series satisfactorily after five seasons is not an easy task. Mammoth projects like Game of Thrones have failed in the eyes of many fans. In the case of Breaking Bad, many viewers agree: this ending was truly well-made and satisfying. On IMDb, users praise the final episode titled “Felina.” MeinMMO editor Jasmin Beverungen had her own issues with the series.
In short: the story is quite dark in itself and ends on a negative note. Anyone wanting to know more can feel free to expand the following box.
The ending of Breaking Bad – Warning Spoilers!
Breaking Bad does not end well for protagonist Walter White. He dies in the end, which makes sense in the context of the series. His partner Jesse escapes, finally getting away from White’s control.
Although Breaking Bad absolutely needs its dark story and is exactly why it is so good, the creators of the series have not skimped, and provided the main character with an alternative ending.
Breaking Bad even spawned a critically acclaimed spin-off:
Dreaming can be bad
What does the alternative ending look like? The mentioned scene was originally on the DVD of the last season. In it, the actor of Walter White, Bryan Cranston, awakens from a long, dark dream.
It becomes clear: all events from Breaking Bad were just a dream. And Bryan Cranston does not awaken as his character Walter White, but as family man Hal from the series Malcolm in the Middle. Fans know, of course, that Cranston also portrayed this character.
This is also the subject of numerous fan theories, which deal with the idea that the two series exist in the same universe. Some even believe that Malcolm in the Middle is the unofficial successor series to Breaking Bad and that it is the same character. This would imply that the ending of Breaking Bad is not what it seems, and Walter White has deceived everyone.
The alternative ending on the DVD takes a different direction: it shows that Hal only had a bad dream. In it, he was a chemist and experienced terrible things, produced drugs and sold them. He built bombs and killed people – Hal is visibly shaken and tells his wife Lois about the dream.
Everything that has happened to Walter White did not actually happen. Hal can breathe a sigh of relief, or so it seems. At the end of the scene, however, the camera pans to the right side and shows an armchair. On it lies the famous black hat of Walter White.
It remains open whether Hal has anything to do with the character from the dream, or if he simply wears the hat.
The alternative ending is primarily a gag, but quite successful. The fact that Bryan Cranston and Lois actress Jane Kaczmarek slip back into their old roles for the scene is sure to be a small highlight for fans of Malcolm in the Middle. And friends of Breaking Bad receive a slightly more positive ending for their favorite series. Did you know: A cool character in Breaking Bad exists only because an actor missed a shooting day
