In FIFA 20, there will be the possibility to give goalkeepers individual instructions. What these will be and how they differ will be revealed here.
This is new: According to the football magazine Kicker, there will be two different types of goalkeeper instructions in FIFA 20. These will distinguish between instructions for the goalkeeper’s behavior inside and outside the penalty area.
How it was before: Until now, FIFA players could only dictate instructions and tactics for field players. The goalkeeper, on the other hand, often did what he wanted.
In the still current part of the football simulation FIFA 19, the FIFA player has to rely entirely on the AI of the goalkeeper. Here, goalkeepers have various traits embedded in their stats and determine their behavior in different situations. However, FIFA players have been united for years: The goalkeeper is a problem.
This should change in FIFA 20. The player gets more control over the goalkeeper.
For example, Manuel Neuer has the trait “Out of Goal,” which ensures that he will, like in real life, often rush towards the attacker to clear the ball. However, this is often dangerous in both virtual and real football and can quickly lead to goals against.
While these traits will still exist for goalkeepers in FIFA 20, they are not active if you have assigned the keeper other instructions.
These are the new goalkeeper instructions
Inside the penalty area: There are three different instructions for goalkeepers who are in the penalty area.
- Caution with crosses – With this setting, the goalkeeper acts defensively and stays on the line.
- Balance – Here the keeper decides his behavior himself as in FIFA 19 and tries to act balanced.
- Intercept crosses – The goalkeeper is more offensive and tries to intercept crosses.
Outside the penalty area: For behavior outside the penalty area, there are 2 instructions that can be selected.
- Sweeper Keeper – With this setting, the keeper will more often aggressively go for the ball and leave the penalty area in emergencies. He will look for 1-on-1 situations.
- Balance – Like in FIFA 19, the goalkeeper will play autonomously and act balanced.
This is changing for gameplay: The new goalkeeper instructions could become a really strong feature for FIFA 20. In theory, you have significantly more control over the keeper and can command him according to the situation and the opponent. A real advantage!
Also, the body sizes and stats of the individual goalkeepers play a larger role with the new instructions. So, you should probably not give smaller goalkeepers like Yann Sommer the “Intercept Crosses” setting. Instead, you can choose “Caution with Crosses” to prevent unfortunate goals against.
At the latest with the demo of FIFA 20 or at a demo station at this year’s Gamescom, you will be able to test this feature yourself.
