In recent years, the formation of the narrow diamond, 4-1-2-1-2, has been dominant. We asked EA Sports about balancing the lineups in FIFA 19.
Update: We present all 5 new formations in FIFA 19 here.
It is always difficult to speak of a “best lineup” in both real football and virtual football. After all, the formation largely depends on the players available and one’s own playing style.
Some focus more on ball possession, others prefer counterattacks, some rely on speedy wingers, and others like to combine play through the middle.
4-1-2-1-2 (2) is a force: However, a formation has also established itself among the professionals in FIFA 17 and FIFA 18: the narrow diamond, which is deployed as 4-1-2-1-2. Almost one in three of the top 50 players plays the Weekend League with the narrow diamond, which many fans emulate. This makes 4-1-2-1-2 (2) the most played formation in FIFA 17 and FIFA 18.
What makes 4-1-2-1-2 (2) so strong?
A balanced formation: The narrow diamond relies on a strong center, offensive creativity, and defensive security. The opponent has little space.
Through the middle: The most important player in this formation is the CAM, who must control the game. Additionally, the defense is solid, as the CDM plays quite defensively. Those who prefer to combine through the middle and have a strong passing game will be happy with this formation.
Does the formation also have weaknesses? Yes, not much can be done on the flanks. Additionally, matches can become quite chaotic and tight if the opponent also has a formation with a narrow center.
What does the future hold for the narrow diamond in FIFA 19?
We approached Samuel Rivera, the gameplay producer of FIFA, in an interview about this dominant formation and asked him if FIFA 19 would respond to it.
No OP formation in FIFA 19: According to Rivera, a brand-new gameplay system will be implemented in FIFA 19, which means all formations are under scrutiny. They want to ensure there are no overpowering tactics anymore – this will be closely monitored and constantly evaluated.
Each formation now has its strengths and weaknesses.
Finding balance is difficult: Rivera admits that it is very challenging to balance the formations. However, he assures that EA Sports plays the game themselves, talks to the professionals, and analyzes statistics on the most popular formations. Necessary changes will be made.
We are curious to see which formation(s) will attract attention in FIFA 19. The dominant era of the narrow diamond may at least be coming to an end.
