Detective Conan now has over 1,100 episodes. In many of these episodes, there is a character whose appearance we do not know. The character has reached the point where there is now a separate anime series about them – even in Germany.
Which character is it? In almost all episodes where the identity of the perpetrator is still unknown, a black silhouette appears instead. This does not reveal who is behind the crime committed in the episode.
The perpetrator is completely cloaked in black and has no distinctive features:
- The body shape is always the same, regardless of the perpetrator’s gender and size. There have only been isolated cases where female breasts were suggested.
- With several suspects, the perpetrators differ in body shape and speech.
Thus, he gives no hint of the criminal. The viewer has the perspective of Detective Conan and must also puzzle over who is behind the crimes. The silhouette creates tension in many cases and has a menacing aura.
The idea for the perpetrator figure was taken by Gosho Aoyama from the manga The Kindaichi Case Files, as he once revealed. However, the creepy figure has now made it so far that there is a separate spin-off about it.

What kind of series is this? Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa is an anime series with 12 episodes, each episode lasting only 10 minutes. It is more of a parody of Detective Conan, in which you can experience the everyday life of the perpetrator figure in the crime-ridden city of Beika.
Thus, the perpetrator has their morning routine, works as a cashier, and in the meantime plans new murders. Several characters from the main series appear as well. However, the spin-off is not from the pen of Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama, but from Mayuko Kanba.
Where can I watch the series? The complete anime can be watched in Germany on Netflix. You just need an active subscription with the streaming service to watch the series. Alternatively, you can purchase the accompanying manga volumes. The 9th volume is supposed to be released in October 2024.
