For a companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 you can discover a bittersweet scene when you lead her to the capital’s cemetery.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, there is almost infinite exploration. Many events are triggered only when you have the correct companion active in the group – like a “meeting” with Karlach’s parents. You can indeed find them… or at least their grave in the city of Baldur’s Gate.
What was found? In the subreddit for Baldur’s Gate 3, the player AutisticDurge highlights a small scene that many may have missed. Because when you visit the large cemetery of Baldur’s Gate in the last act of the game with Karlach by your side, you can find two special graves: the graves of Karlach’s parents.
Arriving at the grave, Karlach speaks to the graves as if her parents could still hear her. She says she is “back” and has “brought friends”. She also tells her parents that she is currently happy and has to deal with some “really important shit” that they might be able to see for themselves.
Your Tiefling companion uses the time to reflect on the past and how her parents died:
- Her mother died when Karlach was a teenager. She had a high fever and before a decent healer was found, she had already passed away.
- Her father died during a delivery. His cart overturned on the road and buried him beneath it.
What happened to Karlach afterward? Those who have followed Karlach’s story know that she later fell into the hands of Gortash, who subsequently sold her to the Hells, where she had to fight as Zariel’s “Champion” in the arena. There, her heart was also replaced with a hellish contraption that ensures Karlach can fight more wildly but also only enjoys a temporary life outside the Hells – and time is running out faster.
Community believes Karlach deserves better
Basically, since the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, there has been a sentiment in the game’s community that Karlach deserves a better ending. When the game was originally released, there were even no possibilities for a good ending due to some bugs – it was almost always dramatic and often heartbreaking.
Now there are at least a few “neutral” endings where Karlach’s future is uncertain and there is at least a possibility that she has a future at all. But still, many wish for a clear “happy ending” for Karlach – because that would fit well with everything she has experienced so far.
