The thunder god Thor is known for his fiery temper, which often gets him into difficult situations. However, this time he has invoked the wrath of the wrong person.
What is this about? It is about Twilight of the Gods, a new series on Netflix related to Norse mythology. The series is produced, among others, by Zack Snyder, who has made a name for himself as the director of several films in the DC universe. The animation is handled by the French studio Xilam Animation.
You can watch the trailer for the series here:
What do we know about the series? It all started with a classic “meet-cute”: on a bloody battlefield, the warrior Sigrid saves the life of a king named Leif, after which the two fall in love and even want to get married.
A dispute ends in a massacre
However, the Asgardian gods do not like this wedding at all, least of all Thor. He shows up at the wedding – uninvited, mind you – and starts sending the wedding guests to Helheim. The couple survives, but Sigrid’s family falls victim to the wrath of the thunder god.
With a colorful group of capable warriors and Loki’s support, Sigrid and Leif embark on a seemingly hopeless quest for revenge against the Aesir. We also spotted father god Odin in the trailer, but we still don’t know anything about his role in this whole mess.
For fans of Norse mythology, there could be a lot here. It starts with Loki’s character design, which clearly differs from that of the Aesir. His descent from the Jötnar, the frost giants, might play a larger role.
Which mythological beings are also seen in the trailer:
- The Einherjar, the warriors of the Aesir
- A huge snake – probably Jörmungandr, the Midgard serpent
- Several winged women, most likely Valkyries
On the side of the avengers fights a Ulfark clad in wolf skin. He can also transform into a wolf, just as berserkers in fantasy settings often can turn into bears.
If you are wondering how the author knows what a Ulfark is – he simply played a lot of Age of Mythology as a child. If you are not averse to real-time strategy games, by the way, the remake of this classic is definitely worth checking out: New strategy game on Steam brings tears to players’ eyes: “It was my childhood”
