In Destiny 2, there was a moment in the history of the Guardians when a special event captured the entire community. The first secret Exotic mission. With the discovery of a new portal, the love for surprises began and showed the Guardians that the loot shooter can hide many things.
What a moment it was! Six years ago in 2018, a Guardian accidentally discovered an unknown portal on the still existing Jupiter moon “IO”. “Accidentally” is the right word here, as the Guardian was able to activate the portal while completing a new public event.
The curious thing about it was that no player knew about the portal’s discovery before it was revealed. Once the find was shared on Reddit, every fan wanted to find the portal, yet none knew until then that Bungie had hidden something valuable.
A challenging mission that every player celebrated
How did the discovery happen? Players could only activate the secret portal when they had initiated the “Harrowing Curse” event at the location “Lost Oasis” from Friday to Monday at 7 PM. In the event, Guardians had to eliminate a hidden Taken enemy. After this enemy was defeated, a radiant portal spawned in the open area, leading the players to the secret mission “The Whisper.”
The mission engaged everyone with excitement since it revealed nothing about itself – only a 20-minute timer was ticking down. Without knowing where they were, players navigated through the labyrinth of Vex constructs and abandoned ruins filled with remnants.
However, one thing was for sure: Bungie had hidden something very valuable that not everyone should get or find immediately. In fact, they were right, as upon successfully completing and defeating the three tough bosses, fans received the exotic sniper “Whisper of the Worm,” which at the time was one of the leading DPS kings. Additionally, there was also a hidden ship that could be secured as well.
What was the atmosphere like at that time? Bad, to put it mildly. Destiny 2 did not have good DLCs at that time. These DLCs had shallow storylines and also the content left much to be desired. In the Warmind expansion, a large portion of players were not satisfied, but this kind of mission rekindled the spark of discovery for many Destiny fans.
Such missions or secrets were mainly known from the time of Destiny 1. The fact that something like this was also made possible in Destiny 2 allowed many Guardians to look forward with hope to future content. Following “The Whisper,” more secrets like the Black Armory and also everything surrounding the Exo “Perfected Break” appeared.
What is the current state of Destiny? A great time, but unfortunately it belongs to the past. Bungie is currently only releasing obvious missions. There are no plans for secrets for a long time. The risk of players leaking them and ruining the excitement is too great. Furthermore, such missions require a lot of time to plan and realize, and as long as Bungie does not have that available and pursues other plans, there will be nothing.
Nevertheless, it is nice to look back occasionally at times that united Guardians. Sadly, those times have become very rare in the current era of Destiny 2. How did you find the mission “The Whisper” back then? Did you celebrate it? Feel free to share your impressions from back then with other users.
