Recently, the basic subscription was removed from the Netflix offering in Canada, which the community is not happy about. However, this change could also soon be implemented in Germany.
The basic subscription of Netflix is being eliminated in Canada. It cost 9.99 Canadian dollars and allowed streaming on one device at the same time.
So if you are using Netflix alone, you have either the cheaper option, which includes ads (standard subscription with ads), or you pay 5 € more monthly for the standard subscription. It is suspected that this change is a hidden price increase.
Here you will find a detailed explanation of the subscription options currently available at Netflix in Germany and who is particularly affected by the removal of the basic subscription.
How does the community react to the removal of the subscription model in Canada? Under various posts by CTV News and CTV Edmonton as well as reddit there are numerous negative reactions to the removal of the option.
Some users fear that this change might come to them as well. Many said they would cancel their subscription if further price increases occurred, while others have already canceled their subscription because they believe the platform has become “too greedy”.
Other users give tips on which streaming platform they would recommend as an alternative.
- RevWhalen: “If they increase the price any further, it will be goodbye Netflix in this household”
- berfthegryphon: “Apple probably has the highest quality library of all the streaming platforms I know, and that’s most of them available in Canada. I kept it after Ted Lasso ended because they have great shows.”
- JusticeBaoBao: “I just canceled Netflix. They are getting greedy.”
Netflix had already increased prices earlier this year in May and started charging for additional households on one account. You can find more about this here with our colleagues at Gamepro.
Will the basic subscription soon be eliminated for us as well? Currently, there is no official information from Netflix on whether the removal of the basic subscription is also planned in Germany.
However, early signs suggest that this change could come to us as well. If you sign up for a Netflix subscription, the basic subscription is only shown after an additional click; it is somewhat hidden.
This implies that Netflix may want to make the model less visible compared to the other three subscriptions, so fewer people should choose it. A complete removal of the option is thus conceivable.
