Fraudsters regularly try to obtain valuable data. 3 services and accounts are particularly affected. A security service explains which ones are especially at risk.
Where do the data come from? The controversial security service Kaspersky has collected data in recent months to find out who hackers and fraudsters are particularly targeting. Kaspersky analyzed a sample of 25 names from the “Best Global Brands 2023” evaluation by Interbrand for phishing abuse.
Amazon, Facebook, and Gmail particularly at risk
Which services are particularly at risk? The most at risk are Amazon, Facebook, and Gmail. Since the beginning of 2024, attacks are reported to have increased by more than 240 percent, according to Forbes.com. Other companies whose accounts are currently at high risk include:
- Microsoft
- DHL
- PayPal
- Mastercard
- Apple
- Netflix
Why are the services so at risk? For some services, it is probably not surprising, as PayPal, Mastercard, or Amazon are primarily driven by financial interests.
For other accounts, it may not be as obvious. However, accounts like Facebook, Microsoft, or others are at risk because many users log in to other websites with one account. The “Sign in by Facebook” makes it easier for users, as they do not have to remember another annoying password.
The problem, on the other hand, is this: Once someone has access to your Gmail or Facebook account, they can theoretically access all other services you have linked and reset passwords or entire accounts. Suddenly, you are locked out of multiple accounts because hackers have access to your Google account.
Additionally, many users tend to use weak passwords or billions of passwords are leaked to the public.
Strong passwords and additional protective measures can help
This is how you protect yourself: Many websites – such as Amazon, Facebook, or PayPal – are now implementing additional protective measures like two-factor authentication: When you log into your account, you receive an additional password or token via SMS or app that you must enter. Another option is to use physical devices that you need for login.
Also important: Do not click on any strange emails or open any attachments. Phishing emails are still the biggest entry point for hackers to obtain your data.
