A visit to a used electronics store led to the revival of a legendary console on a highly unusual screen.
What did the retro fan put together? Reddit user Joshisnot12 visited a local used electronics store. There, he discovered, as he posted on Reddit, a portable DVD player with an integrated screen. By itself, this is nothing particularly unusual, but what piqued his curiosity were the connections. Because they not only allowed the player’s video signal to be transmitted to an external display but also input one as well. That gave him an idea.
Fortunately, he found the necessary cables for his spontaneously conceived project just a few shelves away. At home, a legendary gaming console from Japan came back to life on the special screen.
Speaking of DIY: Students created something dystopian from a META glasses, a PC, and an AI: a spy glasses. We present to you the project, which aims to highlight the dangers of technology, in article form. You can watch the accompanying video directly:
A special monitor, even for an NES
Which console did he connect? Joshisnot12 connected the portable DVD player to a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). And it actually worked. He can now play classics like the Mega Man 2 shown above or other games like the oldest parts of the Mario series on it. The display appearing bluish in the picture is, by the way, actually black according to him.
I love this sweet, unadulterated nostalgia
Can I recreate this? Theoretically yes, you only need an NES console, which can be found for under 100 euros on platforms like Ebay. Portable DVD players can sometimes be found on the same site for less than 20 euros. However, you need to ensure that the screen has the correct input or you have a corresponding adapter to use the old outputs of the NES.

On Reddit, the project is getting plenty of love. While only a few are interested in such a niche project, for them it is the epitome of exemplary retro:
