A nearly 10-year-old building game on Steam has almost been written off by its fans. Now, the developers surprise everyone with a brand new expansion.
If you are among the players who until now didn’t really know anything about Besiege, the concept is quite simple. In the medieval building game on Steam, you build to destroy.
With your constructed machines and creations, you set out to destroy a few peaceful villages.
A new trailer now announces the first expansion for the game. This surprises fans especially, as they seem to have given up on the title:
Early Access launched nearly 10 years ago
Why is the expansion so surprising? To understand why the developers surprise everyone with this expansion, we need to look a bit into the history of the game. Besiege started its Early Access nearly 10 years ago and eventually released a full version in 2020.
However, there was quite a long silence about the game and new content. There were a few smaller updates with new blocks here and there, but nothing substantial that could enhance the gaming experience.
The ratings, however, seem to be hardly affected by this. To this day, the community rates the game as 95% positive. Even the latest reviews on Steam are 96% “very positive.”
What can you expect in the expansion? With “The Splintered Sea,” Besiege is actually getting its first major expansion. It is set to be available on Steam from May 24, 2024.
As the trailer shows, this expansion takes place both on and under the water. You build your machines directly on the sea and aim to destroy other things. In this, you can expect 10 new levels, as well as a new sandbox and new objects fitting the water theme.
In the campaign, you will face new enemies, the so-called “Strangers.” They have occupied a series of islands, and now you want to destroy their fleet, galleons, and underwater fortress. There are also some nasty creatures lurking underwater, just waiting to fight against you.

How is the community reacting? Many fans apparently did not expect any new content anymore. This becomes clear when you look at the comments under the trailer (via YouTube).
For example, user user-mq1rz5mf8h writes that he had actually given up on the game because he hadn’t seen any new information for so long. Regarding the new DLC, he simply adds: “They announced a water DLC, damn legends.”
